Today instead of a character design I drew Harry and Michael in Costume for the ball. Since I didn’t need to make a new character design and just change their outfits I also colored it to give Manga Studio color test run.
I’m drawing a Dresden Files character a day, in order of appearance starting with Grave Peril. Here is Michael Carpenter. The hardest part with him was getting him to look the right age. He has a lot of worry lines and laugh lines, but making them too obvious would make him look too old. I ended up looking at a picture of Sean Bean smiling as reference for where to put them. He’s got salt and pepper hair which is hard to convey in a sketch, so I just filled in the black less. I based his build off a football players and you can see that in the lighter sketch lines where I built up the muscle figure. I put him in plaid because all those lines on the shirt will show off the shape of his build, without making it look like he’s is an impractically tight shirt. Since Michael is the definition of clean cut his shirt is of course tucked in, fits right, and buttoned up. The cloak I was a little unsure about. It never really says how long it is, but it’s compared to Harry’s coat. That made me think it was pretty long. I know the cross is supposed to be red, but I didn’t want it to get lost in the folds of the clock going over his arm. Someone was kind enough on twitter to link me to Amoracchius in the Dresden Files wiki, where it says it’s 5 feet long and fairly unadorned. Same with it’s black scabbard. That mixed with Michael’s big hands covering most of the handle made the whole thing easy to draw.
